The BDR Mutiny Unveiled: Waker’s Bold Stand for the Truth
Publish: Friday, 7 March, 2025, 5:10 AM
General Waker-uz-Zaman, the Chief of Army Staff of Bangladesh, has unequivocally stated that the 2009 mutiny at the Pilkhana BDR headquarters was entirely carried out by members of the Bangladesh Rifles (BDR), leaving no room for doubt or speculation. He emphasized that introducing "ifs" and "buts" into this matter undermines both the justice served to the convicted individuals and the discipline within the security forces.

The BDR mutiny resulted in the tragic deaths of numerous officers and their families, marking a significant event in Bangladesh's history. It posed a serious crisis for the newly formed government. However, under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the situation was brought under control, and the aftermath was effectively managed despite the severity of the violence.

Compared to similar incidents worldwide, the government's response to the mutiny was considered successful in restoring order, ensuring accountability, and addressing the political and social consequences. The response demonstrated strong leadership, a commitment to upholding the rule of law, and a focus on preventing future occurrences.

Although the successful handling of the BDR mutiny was widely praised both nationally and internationally, a small segment of people in Bangladesh were dissatisfied with its resolution. These individuals, who have historically sought to create instability in the country and have never supported an independent Bangladesh, likely hoped the mutiny would escalate into a confrontation between the Army and the BDR, leading to chaos. However, thanks to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's farsighted leadership, the situation was peacefully and successfully managed, dealing a blow to the anti-Bangladesh group. They were shocked by the peaceful resolution.

In response, this group began spreading a false narrative, claiming that if the government had allowed the Army to enter Pilkhana and use force with modern weapons, the situation could have been avoided. This argument is misleading. Had the government taken such an unwise step, the conflict could have escalated, spreading throughout Bangladesh and potentially sparking a widespread civil war. The consequences would have been disastrous—exactly what the anti-Bangladesh elements seemed to desire.

Sheikh Hasina's careful handling of the crisis prevented further bloodshed and ensured the stability of the country, demonstrating that leadership and restraint were essential in preserving Bangladesh's integrity.

The mutiny ended within approximately 33 hours, with the mutineers arrested. A significant number of them were subsequently convicted for their involvement in the mutiny.

After Sheikh Hasina's ousting on August 5, 2024, a certain group of individuals began reviving the narrative surrounding the BDR issue, intending to blame "India" for the events. This narrative appears to be aimed at undermining the strong bilateral relations between Bangladesh and India, potentially increasing tensions between the two countries. By invoking this issue, they seek to create a more polarized environment within Bangladesh, which could lead to greater domestic conflict.

This strategy seems designed to weaken the Awami League and foster anti-Awami sentiment, even though it remains a popular political party in the country. By stirring both external and internal friction, they may be attempting to destabilize the country, hoping that the situation will deteriorate to a level worse than Pakistan's.

Since Sheikh Hasina's exile, Bangladesh has been in a state of chaos. People are living in fear and are deeply frustrated about the country's future, having never experienced such anarchy before. The people of Bangladesh now realize that Dr. Younus and his allies in the cabinet, supported by political factions, have been deceitful. They excel at creating unrealistic hopes for the public while blaming politicians for dishonesty and incompetence. However, in reality, they lack the ability to lead, often masking their true intentions in society to exploit opportunities for personal gain.

They have undermined all major institutions, including the police, administration, RAB, DGFI, NSI, and BGB, adopting a strategy to instigate conflict within political parties. They have turned law enforcement agencies into personal tools, making decisions based on their own interests rather than justice. They have reshaped the judiciary by appointing their own people to ensure judgments align with their instructions. Moreover, they have used so-called student mobs to exert pressure and issue threats wherever necessary. As a result, they have created widespread panic across society, including the media, by imprisoning journalists who bravely report or broadcast the truth.

This group of people maintains a pro-Pakistan mindset despite living in Bangladesh and holds a strong affinity for Pakistan. However, visionary individuals understand the severe consequences that could arise if this sentiment is allowed to grow. This is why the Army Chief took a stand to prevent the spread of this false narrative, prioritizing national security and the country's integrity.

As a Bangladeshi citizen, I deeply admire Mr. Waker-uz-Zaman for taking a stand to eliminate the misunderstandings that were attempted to be created within the Army and BDR, all for the sake of harmony and a prosperous Bangladesh.
